That Damn Hockey Blog: Panthers Have More Control Than The U.S. Government

Florida has a new goalie! Many expected the Jacob Markstrom era to begin in Florida this season, but that will be put on hold for one year, as long-time Boston Bruin, and guy who took last year off, Tim Thomas, has signed a 1-year, $2.5 million deal, with a $3.75 million cap hit with the franchise.

After making the playoffs in the 2011-12 season, being knocked out by the New Jersey Devils in the first round in seven games, the Panthers ended up with the worst record in the National Hockey League last season, on the back of Markstrom, Scott Clemmensen and Jose Theodore.

What does Tim Thomas bring to Florida? He joins Kris Versteeg (one) Brian Campbell (one) and Tomas Kopecky (two), as holders of Stanley Cup rings. However, Thomas is the only one with a Conn Smythe as playoff MVP. A two-time Vezina winner, one-time William M. Jennings trophy, and the first player since Bernie Parent to win the Stanley Cup, Vezina and Conn Smythe in the same season.

The resume is plentiful, but Thomas is 39 years old. He didn’t play anywhere last season, so whether or not he’ll even make it out the year is a gamble for the Panthers, especially considering they seem to be outside playoff contenders at best. Perhaps he’s bought in to provide tutelage for Markstrom, but the latter will more than likely end up in the AHL when Clemmensen returns from injury.

For those wondering, Florida play Thomas’ former team, the Boston Bruins (I don’t count the Islanders, even though he was on their roster, he never played a game for them, not even as backup) five times next season. Mark these dates on your hockey calendar!

The media will be all over it, especially for the first game I feel. Even Bruins starter, and Thomas’ backup in Boston, Tuukka Rask, joked that it’s going to be a “media debacle”. Fun times to be had in Florida for the year ahead.

2013-14 Season Schedule Released

With the announcement of NHL players being able to compete in the Winter Olympics in Sochi, the NHL released the schedule for the upcoming 2013-13 NHL season. This season will include the Winter Classic, which was cancelled last season due to the lockout, but will include the two teams that were meant to play in the Winter Classic, the Detroit Red Wings and the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Also included are five more outdoor games as well as the Winter Classic. Ottawa and Vancouver will contest the 2014 Tim Horton’s NHL Heritage Classic, and the Coors Light NHL Stadium Series will be four matchups, involving the Anaheim Ducks against the Los Angeles Kings at Dodger Stadium, New York Rangers versus New Jersey Devils and New York Rangers versus New York Islanders, both taking place in Yankee Stadium and Pittsburgh Penguins vs Chicago Blackhawks at Soldier Field.

There will be a break from Feb 9-25, to make way for the Winter Olympics, where the majority of NHL players will be taking part.

NHL 14 Cover Vote – Final Result

For the first time since John Vanbiesbrouck on the cover of NHL ’97, a Goaltender will grace the cover of an EA Sports NHL game. Martin Brodeur from the New Jersey Devils, and Sergei Bobrovsky of the Columbus Blue Jackets, were voted by the fans, as the final two, with only one being able to be on the cover of NHL ’14.

2013 NHL Draft Lottery Results

April 29 saw the 2013 NHL Draft Lottery take place, which would decide the draft order from 1 to 14 in the upcoming draft, decided by the 14 teams that did not make the Stanley Cup playoffs.

This was the order of placing, and their odds going into the lottery.

The lottery results however, showed a slightly different story. They showed that being the worst team in the NHL, doesn’t necessarily grant you the First Overall Pick, as the Colorado Avalanche move up from 2 to 1, at the expense of the Florida Panthers, who take the 2 spot. Otherwise, there was a status quo with all other positions, meaning the draft order for the first 14 picks in the draft at the moment, are as follows:

Martin Brodeur scores 3rd career goal

Only twelve times prior to this evening in the long, illustrious history of the National Hockey League has a goaltender been credited with a goal.  Ron Hextall and Martin Brodeur were the only goaltenders with multiple goals through their career, tied at two each.  The thirteenth goalie goal in NHL history has broken the tie – Martin Brodeur stands alone as the only goaltender to score three goals in his career.  What’s more, the goal this evening was a Power Play Goal.

The Hurricane’s Patrick Dwyer was hooked as he was heading in to the New Jersey zone, and on the delayed call, Carolina goaltender Dan Ellis headed toward the bench in favor of an extra skater.  As he was skating off, Jordan Staal attempted to pass the puck to defenseman Tim Gleason, who missed the pass, which then careened off of the boards and into the empty Carolina net.  Having been the last Devil to touch the puck, the goal was credited to Brodeur.

No, it’s certainly not often that you see a goalie credited with a goal in a game, but more often than not, it’s number 30 for the New Jersey Devils.  Congrats, Marty!
